Dateline USA: We're Back. 5 hours from Perth to Sydney, 9 hours from Sydney to Taipei, Taiwan, 14 hours from Taipei to Los Angeles and 5 hours from LA to Tampa Bay! We don't want to see a plane for a while! The last gig we did was at the Charles Hotel. We again had "Soundman of the Tour" Rik Van Der Velde. Great Sound! The vibe was great and we went out with a bang! Many thanks to all the Musos, Punters, Publicans and Blues supporters from the great "Land Down Under". The tour was an unqualified success and we are planning a repeat in 2004. We are now planning a short vacation and then will be working on the next tour to Scandinavia.

Rockingham: Talk abut a turned on, connected, blues loving bunch of people! The Rockingham Hotel was the scene of a Blues Meltdown last night. Special thanks go out to WA Blues Society Pres. Roger, Sue, Suzie, Fizz and all the other peole who organized this memorable gig. Our Australian Bassman Hans Deberitz aka "The Norwegian Thunderstick" aka "Captain Diesel" was in rare form and layng down the Groove with his Stand-up bass and electric Hofner. The crowd danced, sang along and partied hearty. A special thanks goes out to Mike who organized a wonderful dinner for us before the show.

Freemantle. The Fly By Night Musicians Club was an incredible gig. First, we traveled all day from Geraldton and rolled in to find the Manager John. He worked to find us accomodations and came up with a beautiful Condo Right on the Ocean! He also took us to get McDonalds and made our stay at his club most enjoyable. I have to give him the "Publican of the Tour" Award. Next, our sound man Rik Van Der Velde was awesome. We have had good sound throughout the tour but I must give "Soundman of the Tour" award to Rik. Absolutely perfect sound in the monitors and out front, no feedback. Clear, crisp clean highs and perfect mids and lows. Finally, Jackson on Lights did great job of lighting us up. This venue is a Musicians club and it is run by and for musicians. If you ever get to Perth, you must check this venue out. The night before we played the Freemason Hotel in Geraldton. This upscale turn of the century hotel rolled out the red carpet for us. Nice rooms, Huge steaks and a great stage and room. The people of Geralton were a great audience and again, we got fantastic Aussie hospitality. Geraltdon is about 450K's from Perth and we did the turnaround in record time. Special thanks to our Aussie Bassman extraordinaire, Hans Deberitz, who has graced this part of the tour with his incredible upright bass techniques for the steel guitar show as well as electric (Hofner) bass on the hot stuff. We are traveling in a 12 passenger diesal powered maxi-van for this leg of the tour, and Hans is the Captain of the van. Here's another 180. The Van has the gearshift knob on the left. So, the steering wheel is on the right, the turn signals are on the right, and the gearshift is on the left. Diesel is the way to go in Australia as gas is about 90c a litre. (about $4 a gallon) Saw lots of Roos on this leg of the tour.

Dateline Perth: Julio and I drove the rig across 1,500K of outback from Adelaide to Canberra to Perth and then turned in the rig and flew to Perth to Join Molten Mike. We were met at the airport by the fabulous Jaime who took us to a hotel. We leave in the morning for Geraldton which is the 1st gig of a 4 gig run in Western Australia. The buzz is even louder here on the West Coast. Lots of Airtime and Our Aussie Bass Player Hans Deberetz is ready to crank out the Blues. The tour is wrapping up but still a lot more stories to tell. New Photos will be posted soon. Here is another Aussie Slang: Smash. They do not have car crashes, they have car smashes. In Sydney they have signs that say "Smash Zone, Next 5 Km." I guess this means that if you want to have a smash you can go to that Zone!??? And the repair shops say "We fix Smashes".

The Folk Center in Adelaide was a real high point of the tour. The sound was perfect, the stage was large, the lights just right, and the Punters were one of the best, most attentive audiances we have played to. At the end of the evening we were joined by 3 Musos from the audiance including "Resonator Russ" who played the 1933 Style O and sang in a very gravelly voice, Robert on Harp and Martin on Electric guitar. A real Jam ensued and magic was made. Next stop Western Australia. Clear across the outback. (We are Flying). The people of Adelaide will not be forgotten. Here's a 180 for you. When driving, The Steering wheel is on the Right, and you drive on the Left, and when you use the turn signal, your windshield wipers go on. This is because the wipers are on the left stick and the turn signals are on the right! The pedals, thank goodness work the same.

Adelaide: a beautiful Australian city with a large park ringing the entire downtown area. Last night was a blowout with the Workers of Adelaide partying hearty! These people sure know how to have a good time. The Workers Club is a large venue with a great stage, lights and Klipsch PA! It was a hot night and the hall had no air, so we proceeded to Melt Down with style and a lot of sweat. This place also had the largest snooker tables I have ever seen and they shoot 8 ball on these huge tables. The publican (owner) kept getting us beer when we asked for water and the crowd was in a frenzy. Word is now preceding us wherever we go and the crowds are getting bigger and bigger. Tonight is the Folk Center and then off to Perth by air. Here's a new saying, it seems to be regional " Too Easy, Mate".

Just 2 weeks to go on the Meltdown-Under tour of Oz. Saturday night saw us playing at the Cornish Arms in Melbourne. The highlight was an appearance by the "King of the Blues in Oz" Dutch Tilder. Dutch is credited with bringing Blues into the Mainstream in Australia back in the 70's. He has 11 CD's and 10 vinyl LP's to his credit. The Singer,/Songwriter/Guitarist sat in with Molten Mike, Julio and Sticks backing him up and did 4 original blues songs from his huge portfolio of originals. It was a magic night and one we will not soon forget. Sunday night we played the Sleepy Hollow Blues Club in Geelong. This club was anything but sleepy! The capacity crowd was over the top on every song. The Ozzies sure know how to have fun. We have a few days off and then it's off to Adelaide. Should have some more photos up soon. Slang for the day: "Doff Doff" music. Slang for techno.

Melbourne, Aus. We are staying at the Elizabeth Towers right across from Melbourne University. Last night, Mike did a solo show for the Melbourne Blues Society. We had a large crowd of appreciative Musos. We also did 2 radio interviews including one for JJJ radio, ABC. The Australian Broadcast Company is owned by the Government and it is hard to get into their system. Mike played 3 songs live including "Aussie Surfer Girl" which is going over real well. If you want to listen to this song, please go to music clips. You may download that and 8 other songs FREE until December 31, 2004. Tonight, we play the Rainbow Hotel. The Vibe is getting bigger in Melbourne and throughout the Country of Oz! Slang for the day "bugger" which is used in a lot of connotations such as "you must be a bugger singer"

Tanja Hall was a real highpoint. This place is built on top of a hill in a cow pasture! As we were setting up, the Black & White Cows were watching us through the door. The place packed out and we rocked em with the blues. Lots of dancing and applause. What a night! Next day we loaded up and drove to Bruthen, about 450 km South. The Bruthen Inn was built in 1858. It is on a hill right in the center of the town. We had another great gig and the proprietors went overboard with providing us with rooms, food, etc. Turns out they host a Blues Festival every year at this place and they have a large outdoor pavillion with barbque pit. We played inside Sunday Afternoon as it is unseasonably cold. We also did this show "unplugged " and it sounded very rootsy and bluesy. We are now on the road to the big city of Melbourne. Slang for the day: In Australia "Pissed" means getting drunk.

We finished up Johnno's at Cairns with a bang. The fans were most appreciative and the staff was also. The manager said we were one of the best acts that has come through in a long time! They have invited us back again next year. We flew out of Cairns and back to Sydney. Played the Brass Monkey, a basement club in Sydney. Very Bluesey and good vibe. Then we proceeded to Pearly Shells in Moruya. The band was very tight and the large crowd of Punters was very enthusiastic. Then it was back to the Motel for a nights rest and then back into the van for Tanja. We are now in Tanja, having driven about 3 hours South . Mike did a Guitar Workshop in town. It is quite chilly. (another 180: the further South you go the colder it gets). We are anticipating a big crowd at Tanja Hall. The Hall is off the main road and was built in 1903. They are throwing a big party at the hall for it's 100th anniversary. There has been a lot of buzz about this one because Rod and Myra Niemeir( who are putting us up in their lovely home, are the promoters and they have been getting Radio , Newspaper, Posters and extra flyers out. Ross Ward is again opening for us. This is about the halfway mark of the Tour and things are going well. We will have some new photos up soon. Slang of the day: "Flooner" This can be used as a verb, a noun, an adverb or pronoun. Example: "He is such a floon" I believe it is the cross between fool and loon. Flooning is the activity, such as going into a room and forgetting why you went in it to begin with. And another: "No Drama, Mate" which is self explanatory.

Cairns, day 3. What a day! The group headed off to Port Douglas, about an hour from Cairns. Very swanky like Marco island only with big volcanic mountains and Miles and Miles of South China Sea Beach. Our host was an Aussie named Sam, who owns a farm in the tablelands. He was the perfect host and unofficial tour guide. Then, back to the hotel. Cairns has a huge saltwater pool on the beach, Very therapeutic and people come here from literally all over the world. Johnos was packed to the rafters. Johno himself and his group opened the show and this guy is the real deal. Then Molten Mike exploded onto the stage with "Worst Blues I ever Had" and the band Cooked for 3 long sets!. The Aussies are great Punters (fans) and this gig is memorable. We had people from Denmark, Sweden, Japan, Calfornia, China, England, Spain, Germany and many Aussies including a large contingent of Aboriginal People! All were dancing and grooving to the songs. Many of the patrons were dancing on the big solid picnic style tables that ring the stage. CHECK OUT THE 1st PHOTOS of the tour.

Cairns, day 2. A meltdown at Johnnos! We got into town via Virgin Blue (The plane was painted red, another 180!) Went to the hotel, checked in and went to Johnnos. We were met by 3 support staff who organized Drums, Amps, and soundcheck. Imagine 10 Bose haning from the ceiling and another 2 stacks on either sde of stage, Monitors, Lights, the whole enchilada. A one armed Didgerdo player opened for us (I do not make this stuff up) His name is Charlie and he has Aborigenie samples and wicked rhythm tracks. He calls his invented instrument a Didgerbone. By the time we hit the stage the crowd was WILD (Free Beer!) We Rocked the house and had 'em begging for more. did 2 encores. Back tonight for another go. Slang for the day: The people of Oz end lots of words with "ie": Footie = football, ciggie = cigaret, You get the idea.

Cairns, Australia. Looks like Hawaii from the air. Very hot and humid as it is getting to be summertime here (another 180: you go north to get warmer!) We played the famous Basement in Sydney last night to a large crowd and the punters loved it! Show opened with Ross Ward doing a solo and the crowd applauded loudly after every song. Then Molten Mike hit the stage like a firestorm and "kicked arse" for 2 - 75 minute shows. This was a $25 cover and a Tuesday nite and the place was full of people. Our distributor in Australia, Wayne Russell of RAW records was there with his family as well as lots of Musos we have met including Wolf Mail from LA who is touring in Oz right now. Wolf sat in the last set along with Ross's Great saxman, Dave. It was big, it was fat and it was exciting. The reviews are coming in from all over Australia now and everyone is buzzing about the Molten Mike group. The basement has seen all of the worlds great artists through the years including Buddy Guy and Gloria Estefan to name a few. What a great venue! The manager was overheard saying "These guys are REALLY good!" We are going to open tonight at Johnnos in Cairns and the manager said they are unveiling their new micro brew and it will be FREE BEER! Should be a wild night. Slang of the day:"Going Tropo". This means that it gets so hot you go crazy with the heat! They haven't seen hot until they see Molten Mike.

Just finished up the Gold Coast leg of the tour. The highpoint was a club in Brisbane called "The Healer" a converted church. A big appreciative crowd. In case you are wondering about photos we have had a hard time finding high speed computer lines. We will soon post some, however. Next stop, The Basement in Sydney. THis is the hottest club in town. Then we fly to Johnnos in Cairns. The people of OZ are most appreciative of our music. And our Aussie Bass player Zoltan Budais and our opener Ross Ward have been fantastic bandmates.

Tonight we played the Lismore RST Club. This was a private membership club with two big ballrooms, a Restaurant and a casino. Kinda like a mini-Las Vegas. We had a packed dance floor, sold lots of CD's and the band cooked. Our Bass player Zoltan (Wally) Budai is as good as they get and a great guy to travel with. Also on this Show Ross Ward opened up as a single and "kicked Arse" as they say. Last night we did a recording session from 11PM to 4 AM at the music farm and knocked out a song Ross Ward brought in called "Man of the Road" a very powerful minor key ballad. The first of many AUS-USA collaborations.

Molten Mike played his first solo gig in Australia tonight at Ross Wards' home base Kokopellis in Bangalow to a standing room only crowd. One group of 4 punters drove over 300 Kilometers to see Molten Mike. At the end of the evening Mike was joined by Zoltan Budais on Acoustic Bass and Sticks Randall on African Djembe drum. Slang for the day: A few Roos loose in the top paddock" means crazy.

We are staying at a "Recording Farm" in Bangalow. The engineer is Michael Bates and he is English. You reach the farm by going down Possum Creek Drive. We are in the middle of the rainforest and it is very quiet. The people of OZ love the steel guitars. Everything is expensive. $10 a pack for ciggies. $1 per liter ($4 per gal) for gas. Lots of little differences and some big ones. I call them 180's for 180 degrees difference. Here are a few: Light switches: up is off, down is on. Electric current AUS 220, USA 110V. We navigate by the North star. In Oz it is the Southern Cross. They drive on the right and the steering wheel is on the right. There are a lot more... Slang for the day: "Carpet Tongue" means "Cotton Mouth".

"No Worries, mate" everyone says that. We are on the Gold Coast at Byron Bay. The town is a Surfers paradise! Lots of Backpackers and a very strong godd time vibe. We are staying in a big farmhouse in the middle of a 100 acre Rain Forest. It is a recording studio, and we will no doubt do an Australian session. We are gearing up for the next leg of the tour. The people are great and the landscape is like California. Slang for the day "Fair Dinkum" means "Are you serious or Your kidding"

G'day Mates from AUSTRALIA. The first day in Sydney, Oct. 2, Baiba and Geoff James of BJ Promotions threw us a welcome to Oz party with Prawns on the Barbi, and fried Octopus as well as many delectible side dishes and salads. Bruce from Ross Ward's Band The Xpress brought in his Black Pearl drums. Zoltan, our bass player from Oz was there. We were set up in the "Sun" Room overlooking the pool and tennis court of this gorgeous 100 year old brick home. The Molten Mike group played a spirited 1 hour set followed by Blues man Wolf Mail from California. Jim Finn another Oz muso took over on drums and a harp player appeared. What a Jam! Slang for the day "Down the Gurgler". The next day, we rushed out to downtown Sydney to Video at the Basement studios. We did Southbound train and the new "Aussie Surfer girl" and the lovely Cleo conducted an interview. You can check out www.thebasement.com.au. Slang for the day "no worries, mate!" The Blues Festival at Narooma was an incredible success with Molten Mike starting out the day at the Albert King Stage to a full house and overflow crowd of jubilant Aussies. Every song was greeted with thunderous applause. The band cooked and a new record for CD sales was set. Australia is ablaze with the Molten Mike Meltdown-under tour. The concert at Woonoona saw the show opening with Ross Ward doing an incredible solo act followed by Molten Mike and the group burning down the house to an overflow crowd. Next stop: Lizottes at Ettalong. Slang for the day: "Get a dog up ya" Another day in Oz. Molten Mike performed at the Sydney Childrens Hospital and entertained the kids with a Steel Guitar set. Last night saw a huge Jam at the Empire Hotel. Molten Mike and Sticks took over the stage and Jammed with Ross Ward on 2nd guitar, a hot Aussie Bass Player, Sax, and Trumpet. As they say downunder it was "Hot S---!" Hitting the road today for 3 gigs this weekend. Slang of the Day: "True Blue, Mate".
